- Spacetaker's Winter Holiday Art Market, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (see link for hours). Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street. Free to get in but bring cash if you want to shop.
- Via Colori Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sam Houston Park, Allen Parkway and Bagby. Free to get in, but donation and proceeds go towards the Center for Hearing and Speech.
Block party blah blah blah. Fight the crowd if you feel like it. But if you don't, here are some other options.
- 5-9 p.m. — POISSANT Gallery opening, "Filtered," featuring new work by three Houston artists, Felipe Contreras, Haden Garrett, and Carol Gerhardt, who's work with Barbies we *love*. Free, 5102 Center Street.
- 6:30-9:30 p.m. — Via Colori sneak peak at Coffee Groundz. See prints from the VC ‘08 Photo Contest Winners and find out how to participate in the 2009 Photography Contest, learn how to promote The Center for Hearing and Speech fourth annual fall fundraiser, listen to good music and enjoy good drinks. Free. Via Colori is November 21-22. Free, at 2503 Bagby.
Are you going to any early Halloween parties this weekend? A local band's last local show? A movie premier? Well, if you have nothing planned yet, shame on you, but Houstonist has some suggestions below.
- ALL WEEKEND
- Rock the Republic — Not technically in Houston but wharves. Looks to be a good time. Featuring bands including The Black and White Years, Hollywood Black, Smile Smile and many more. Add to that a poetry slam and other performance art. In Bryan. Tickets are $10 for one day or $25 for all weekend.
- Festa Italiana — Can you imagine the food at this event? Makes us want to ride our Vespa's to St. Thomas, but we also want to drink as much limoncello as possible so maybe that's a bad idea. Festival open till 11 p.m. tonight and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6, at the University of St. Thomas in the Montrose.
- Crypticon, a convention for all things horror-related, at Reliant Stadium. Advanced tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids for a single day, or $55 for the weekend.
Saturday is the October Full Moon which means you should spend your weekend searching for the perfect Halloween costume. What else can you do this weekend?

Hear that sad sound this weekend? Those are the weeps of students who are headed back to school. Here are a few pick-me-ups for them (and you) this weekend.
As it seems most of the city's indie kids are still debating hipsters vs. hippies from last weekend's Summer Fest, we prepare to guide you into another weekend full of heat, music, art, and of course, f-f-f-fun.
The big news this weekend is of course the Free Press Summer Fest, so you can whet your appetite Friday with a free show from Benjamin Wesley tonight.
- Friday
- 7:30 p.m. — Arsenic and Old Lace presented by the Houston Community College Central Drama Department. Classic black comedy about two spinsters who poison lonely old men for money. Tickets $8, at 3517 Austin at Holman.
- ALL WEEKEND
- SpaceFest: 40th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing, including exhibits, a screening of the original lunar landing footage and more. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See link for details.
- Reliant Dog Show featuring a variety of breeds competing in everything from agility to flyball. Tickets are $10 at the gate, $15 for both days. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Reliant Arena.
Still sleeping off the Independence hangover? Not much happening this weekend, so you can easily make each of the events below.
If you're lucky, you've got today off. But Houstonist never rests, and we're slaving away to help you set your social calendar for this holiday weekend. Our favorite events below.
- Dock Dogs. Televised on the Outdoor Channel, DockDogs competition consists of dogs jumping into water from a designated dock with the largest or highest leap earning that canine a victory. Dogs and owners travel to Houston to compete, and the competition will be open to local dogs too. At Jones Lawn in Discovery Green. See schedule here
- PRIDE, events throughout the weekend, culminating in the Houston Pride Parade at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, along Westheimer at Montrose.
- Extremely Shorts 12 at Aurora Picture Show, Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. Aurora's most popular event, featuring dozens of films under five minutes and the annual Aurora Picture Show birthday picnic. Tickets $6-$12 for non-members, free for members on Saturday and $10 for members Sunday. At Molly Gochman's Studio, 2442 Bartlett St.
Sunday is the Solstice, the first day of summer, and it's a weekend full of festivals and other ways to beat the Houston heat.
- FRIDAY
- 8 p.m. — KUHF presents Metropolis, probably the greatest silent film at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney in Downtown. This film has been rained out twice, so here's hoping for better weather. Original music performed live by the Golden Hornet Project. Free.
- ALL WEEKEND
- The Big Range Dance Festival opens tonight at 8 p.m. featuring new choreographic works by seven different choreographers. There is a second performance Saturday at 8 p.m. On Sunday, at 7 p.m. The Dance Gathering, a show featuring short works 4 minutes and under from 20 distinct choreographers will be presented. Tickets start at $14.
- Unhinged Productions, a GLBT-friendly theater production company in Houston, finishes it's month-long run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch this weekend. Fans of the film would be remiss not to see the stage version. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 otherwise. Show is at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at FrenetiCore Theater.
- Friday
- 8 p.m. — KUHF Silent Film Concert Series: Girl Shy. Two Star Symphony performs along with this silent film about a shy, bumbling bachelor who falls in love with an already-engaged girl. At Discovery Green, FREE!
- 20th Century Modern Market at Lawndale Arts Center. See furniture and art from the height of form vs. function, maybe even buy some. The market is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and entry is $5.
- Spring Crawfish Festival featuring three stages of music and a fair-like atmosphere. Tickets for $10, available online.
- 7 p.m. — Mango's re-opening. The tiny cantina at 403 Westheimer which has been closed since Hurricane Ike has a facelift and new personality. The sign now proclaims it a cafe, bar, live music venue and vegetarian restaurant. Sounds good. It's grand opening is tonight featuring Two Star Symphony, Robert Ellis, I am Mesmer, and The Sideshow Tramps. Cost is $8 after 8 p.m. The website has a full listing of shows almost every night in April.
- 10 p.m. — The Light Rock Express will be playing the songs your parents loved for free at the Big Top, 3714 Main Street.
A nice, subdued weekend ahead after the bustle of last week.
Spring has finally sprung, bringing with it lots of stuff to do this weekend. Best of all, most of it is free!
It's the final weekend of the rodeo, so if you haven't had enough parking woes, fried food or sweaty crowds get your starched little heinie down to Reliant for your last chance.
