For the week of July 12 - 14, 2010
Another week, another set of shows for your listening pleasure. Let's have a look-see at ye olde rokk and rolle calendar, shall we?
Houstonist has just learned that the Giant Battle Monster, Lions of Tsavo, Omotai, Inter Arma, Baring Teeth, Bastard Sapling show that was supposed to be at The Hot Dog Shop tonight has now been moved to Notsuoh, downtown. Don't miss it!
Houston's no stranger to shred-heavy metal bands - we come across so many that sometimes it feels like a new one is spawned each week. Not all of them are impressive riff masters, though Golden Axe, Cavernous, Ghost Town Electric and Scale The Summit all fall into that category. Newcomers Omotai can now be added to that list, debuting their capable chops on their inaugural EP, Peace Through Fear.
For the weekend of July 8th - 11th, 2010
Another weekend, another plethora of music in this town. There are some tough decisions for ol' Houstonist to make, but that won't stop us from offering up a bevy of suggestions for you. Let's get down to business.
For the week of July 5th - 7th, 2010
As the weeks are often wont to do, this one starts out with less heft regarding the musical calendar. However, that doesn't mean that Houstonist will be shuttering ourselves and avoiding the many haunts that will be serving up a band or three. Here's what we're looking at this week.
Welcome to round two of Poster Notes. Houstonist certainly loves a well-made poster, whether it took hours of agonizing design or ten minutes of cut n' paste. They can't all be winners, of course, but neither can we, right? It's ok, you're all winners in Papa Houstonist's book. Let's have a look at what's happening this week.
For the weekend of July 1st - 4th, 2010
Look at that beefy lineup for the weekend! It's so meaty - perfect for the ol' Fourth of July. Did the holiday creep up on you as it has us? Hopefully this rain will subside and provide us with some nice sunny weather, but until then we've got a feast of rock to distract us.
We've realized that even though we have a deep affinity for a well-made poster, here at Houstonist we rarely employ them on the blog. Sure, they're not all winners, but someone put some time and effort [or five minutes of cut n' paste] into making them.
So welcome to our inaugural installment of Poster Notes, where we'll be sharing whatever we can find that's advertising the coming week. Today's edition will carry us through Sunday. Subsequent posts will go up Sunday afternoons and feature flyers for the next seven days [Monday through the following Sunday]. Enjoy!
For the week of June 28th - 30th, 2010
What's that, you say? You'd like to go see some music this week, but you're not sure where to start? Well, shucks! Let good ol' Houstonist offer up a suggestion or two - and as always there's a full calendar after the jump, albeit looks like it has lost a little weight this week.
For the weekend of June 24th - 27th, 2010
Who's ready for another weekend of music? This guy sure is, and Houstonist is too. Let's take a look at what's coming through town, and then we'll make some snarky comments. Oh shoot, we're about to give away our secret formula. In all seriousness, however, there are some big names in town this weekend, and some collective stage ages that'll be pretty darn high.
We're back from trolling the internet for local music news. Read on to find out what Houstonist stumbled across during our breaks from LOLCats and press releases. Hey, the internet is really only good for so much, right?
Hey look! We're just in time to distract from that hour of work until the lunch break. Houstonist has dipped our hypothetical ladle into the stew of local music and once again come up with some savory bits on which to chew. After all, it's only Tuesday - there's still the rest of the week available to be productive. Order up!

For the week of June 21st - 23rd
Here in Houston, more days equals more music. More music means that Houstonist will dish out a few recommendations for you. Recommendations means that you should go see some shows, regardless of whether you pay attention to said recommendations. C'mon, just do it.
Houston, this Saturday evening is your chance to see Lightnin' Hopkins at Discovery Green. "How can this be?" you ask, incredulously. "Lightnin' Hopkins has long since left us!"
For the weekend of June 17th - 20th, 2010
Look at all that music on the calendar this week! Oh, you haven't seen it yet. Our bad. Well, Houstonist has a few recommendations on what to see this weekend before we get down to the music onslaught.
For the week of June 14th - 16th, 2010
Another week, another set of shows. It seems that there's always something available to see in this town. Houstonist has a few ideas about where we'll be found, but allow us to kindly make a few recommendations.
For the weekend of June 10th - 13th, 2010
Another weekend, another delicious plating of music just waiting to be had. Houstonist is ready to get to it, too - there's quite a bit that we'd like to see on the calendar. Fortunately for you, we've compiled it right here into one easy package.
Here at Houstonist, we knew that the Free Press Summer Fest would encompass far more than we were capable of covering. Thus, we enlisted the help of one of our dear friends [and talented musician in his own right], Benjamin Wesley. Here's what he had to say about the festival.
Let me begin with a few small complaints just so that when I am done with my rant it will end on a more positive note than a negative one. That said, the negatives are rather obvious and trivial, and I only bring them up because I had talked about and/or heard these things talked about so much that it seemed like a good place to start: money and weather.
For the week of June 8th - 9th, 2010
Our apologies for missing yesterday's scheduled post - we were still in the throes of post-Summer Fest music hangover. After seeing all the theatrics that the Flaming Lips had in store for us, we had forgotten all about our normal concert calendar duties. We suppose that the old "better late than never" saying holds true, however, so here's the music in town over the next couple days.
You really think you're prepared for the biggest festival of the summer, eh? Well, that may be the case, but Houstonist has put together a list of tips & tricks for Summer Fest, just to cover some of those things that you may have forgotten or just not known.
For the weekend of June 3rd - 6th
It's here - the weekend to end all weekends: Summer Fest, the Destroyer of negative opinions regarding Houston's capacity and propensity for music. We're so ready, but we are so not ready - there's still a lot of planning to be done on our part. But first, we've got a couple days of other shows in store. Let's have a look at that calendar.
So, in theory, you've survived Saturday at Free Press Summer Fest and now you're ready to do it all over again. Maybe this time you'll remember some sunscreen, or a big hat, or you'll actually put some shorts on like a sensible person [note: jorts are perfectly acceptable as well]. Congratulations! Now let's have a look at that schedule, once again in linear format, and remember: Sunday's festivities start earlier than Saturday's.
Houston, Summer Fest is upon us. Before everything gets lost in the music orgy at Tinsley Park this weekend, we beseech you to check out the news we've dug up in the past week. Then have a blast this weekend.
For the week of May 31st - June 2nd
The biggest weekend of Houston music will be upon us before we know it, complete with Wayne Coyne in a plastic bubble, but first we've got a few days in front of us. Let no one accuse Houstonist of resting up for the big game - we'll still be out and about watching music.
For the weekend of May 27th - 30th, 2010
It's another fun-filled weekend packed full of music here in Houston. We're posting in absentia, but don't let that fool you - we're certainly jealous of your options. There are some really good shows this week, so get out and see some bands!
For the week of May 24th - 26th, 2010
It's that time again, so dust off that calendar, put away your TPS reports, and free your ears for the evenings. Houstonist has your biweekly concert listing right here. No, we're not grabbing our crotch when we say that, geez.
This'll be a better-late-than-never post, but we'd rather spread the delayed word than remain silent about one of the coolest things happening in town tonight: the Girls Rock Camp benefit at Dean's Credit Clothing.
For the weekend of May 20th - 23rd, 2010
Good grief, Charlie Brown - there's a heckuva lot of music happening in this town over the next few days. Where's that cloner when we need it? It's hard to pick between all the great lineups. Fortunately for you, that means you've got several options, so get off your duff and see some music this weekend.
For the week of May 17th - 19th, 2010
Another weekend packed full of music brings us around to yet another week of smaller but quality portions. We've got the skinny on the shows being served up for you over the next few days. [Sorry for the foodish analogies, Houstonist wrote this one just before lunch.]
