In one week World Cup 2010 will kick off in South Africa! We at Houstonist will not be traveling there to cover this event, but we will be watching most of the 64 matches on television from any of a number of local eating and drinking establishments. With so many matches, we know it can be difficult to keep up with your favorite teams. Thankfully, we're here to help with a few key resources to help you enjoy your summer of soccer.
We've found that the official FIFA website, while chock-full of useful information, isn't the best way to schedule your viewing.
For folks interested in a nice visual calendar, Spanish site Marca has a colorful calendar wheel.
A more versatile resource is the spreadsheet available for download on the local KeeperNotes website. Not only is it pretty, but the 'keeper, a local soccer maven, has adapted the spreadsheet for the Houston audience with all match times listed on Houston time as opposed to Johannesburg.
Houstonist also loves being able to plug in our predictions and watch the World Cup of our dreams unfold on the spreadsheet. USA! USA!
Finally, if you want to be sure to watch the World Cup with a crowd check out the Houston Dynamo viewing parties The "Summer of Soccer" celebration includes viewing parties at Discovery Green downtown for two of the biggest matches: Mexico vs. South Africa on Friday, June 11, and the United States vs. England on Saturday, June 12.
Now armed with these resources Houstonist plans to celebrate the Summer of Soccer in style. May the best team win!
