It's common knowledge that Lawndale has the best annual Dia de los Muertos art celebration in the city, but did you know you can get some hands-on experience in making a traditional symbol of the Latin American holiday?

Sugar skulls are made from compressed sugar and water, and are decorated and then left as ofrendas at the graves or memorial sites of loved ones. They can also be eaten, if the decorations are consumable.

Last year Houstonist went to the sugar skull workshop and had tons of fun. It's the perfect event to bring a kiddo too, especially if they like candy and like getting their hands messy. Workshop participants get to take home their own skull, and the official Lawndale sugar skull recipe. The rest of the skulls will be saved for decorating at Lawndale's Family Fiesta Day on Saturday.
