On June 18th 2009, NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter on a mission to map the moon's surface for future lunar trips.
Recently the Orbiter sent back images of Apollo 17's moon landing site. Apollo 17 was the 11th manned moon mission and NASA's final mission to the moon. It was launched on December 7, 1972 and returned to earth eleven days later.
The images sent back recently from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter shows the area of activity for Apollo 17. Things that can be seen in the new photos are the location of the U.S. flag that was planted, lunar rover tracks, location of the mission's geophone and the final parking spot of the lunar rover.
